QR codes on Postage Stamps

QR codes on Postage Stamps

QR Codes on postage stamps are not new (cf. QR Code Valentine’s Day postage stamps from Taiwan and a QR Code postage stamp from Spain) but these from Hrvatske pošte, the national postal service of Croatia, incorporate a novel functionality. Each of the 3.10 Kuna (0.56 U.S. dollars) stamps has a unique code printed below the QR Code. Scanning the QR Code takes the user to a mobile site where the unique code can be entered and view confirmation on the receipt of your mail as well as additional data about its route. Users can find out when the mail was sent, how many kilometers it had travelled, when it reached its destination and more. The QR Code stamp was produced to mark the 20th anniversary of the issuance of postal stamps by Croatian Post (1991-2011).

The other examples mentioned above are depicted below.

Another example from 2011:

Another example from 2012:

Russia’s postal operator ‘Russian Post’ has issued a QR Code stamp for the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi (the host city). The stamp has a face value of 25 rubles and the branded QR Code resolves to a mobile version of the official Sochi 2014 website.

With a QR Code reader, you can scan these images. The codes will direct to an applicable website.
